It is not normal for your feet to hurt, and by choosing the right shoes, foot pain can be greatly reduced. Proper support, comfort and quality are all a vital part when choosing footwear. A podiatrist is trained to address these issues and will educate you to choose the best pair for your individual needs. Our feet endure many pressures through common every day use, several hundred tons are exerted on our feet through normal walking in a day. The foot is subject to more injuries than any other part of the body, and footwear is extremely important to minimize lesions. If possible, we should limit and find alternatives for the use of high heel shoes, by substituting with high quality flats or sneakers for part of the day. Varying the heel height and opting for comfort or walking pumps is another choice. Men should select quality oxford styles, slip-ons, loafers, or low dress boots. If you are on your feet all day, choose shoes with comfort insoles, for those working in heavy industry, is imperative to choose safety boots or shoes that have an insulated steel toe cap, waterproof and have a non conductive material sole. It is important to match the shoe to the activity being performed. Shoes for sports should coincide with the activity with that sport, such as running, cross training, tennis and basketball hence, each of these require different levels of support and comfort.
Tips for buying shoes include:
- Always have your feet measured when purchasing new shoes.
- Stand while having feet measured.
- Pick shoes with leather upper.
- Try shoes on with the type of socks you plan on wearing.
- If you have inserts for your shoes, take them with you to ensure a proper fit.
- Try on both shoes and walk in them, making sure you are able to wiggle your toes if it’s a closed toe shoe.
- Feel comfortable right away in the shoes and assure you do not requiring a break in period.
- Shop for shoes at the end of the day as feet tend to swell.

“Dr Drury,
I thought I’d drop you a note and thank you again for hanging in there with me to get over my foot issues – primarily the plantar fasciitis. I’ve got great news to report as my husband and I did an extremely difficult hike at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon a few weeks ago and my foot was fine (other muscle groups were not quite ready for the level of difficulty). The hike was 9.4 miles with major elevation changes. Over this weekend, we did a 27 mile bike ride in Valle Caldera Preserve and again the foot held up fine. It is so wonderful to be back doing the outdoor activities I enjoy.
Truthfully, I’m also be glad to be wearing my cute shoes again a few days a week.
The APC treatment was amazing, I can’t believe the success I’ve had since having the treatment last November. As you know, I went through the cortisone shots with no success and we were starting to consider surgery. The APC treatment eliminated that need.
Thank you again to you and your staff for the part you played in my recovery. I recommend you and your staff to anyone I meet having foot issues.”
